The builder filed a case in court, obviously with the backing of Mr. Khosla, who had been wounded by Maya's scathing remarks. We were served a notice. The first hearing was a month away. We were busy preparing our case. We would meet often, sometimes at the facility, sometimes in my office, sometimes in my boss’. We were doing a good job. I started experiencing a kind of feeling toward you, which was beyond words. I had been in countless relationships but I hadn't felt quite the same before. I was attracted by your charm, your intelligence, your resolve and your exuberance. I was in love. Yeah, definitely.

One day when I was busy writing a report in my office, my boss came in.

“You busy, Jay?”

“Ummm, yeah sort of. What's the matter?”

“Can I talk to you for a moment?”

“Hey, you're the boss! You don't need permission. Fire away!”

“Cut the crap, Jay. I have something very serious on my mind.”

“Sorry Sunidhi. Okay, what is it about?”

“Maya.”

“What about her?”

“She's a very decent girl, Jay. She is a very dignified young lady.”

“I think I know that. Why do you have to tell me?”

“Because I can see what's going on here, Jay. I know that you have taken a liking toward her.”

“She's a client…!”

“Shut up, Jay! Do you think I cannot tell? Any fool would. You should look at yourself when she's around. You look like an absolute idiot. I know you love her.”

I was shocked beyond belief.

“Okay. So what?” I took up a defensive stance.

“Jay, the girl's been through a lot of distress her entire life. What she doesn't want is another deception.”

“What do you mean?”

“Look Jay. I know about you, your lifestyle. I don't want to get personal, but I know about a few of your relationships. I don't know what you think about girls but from the amount of time you spend with each of your girlfriends doesn't suggest you think too highly of women.”

“Sunidhi, this doesn't concern you in the least. I forbid you to speak about my personal life.” I was getting angry, very angry. It was partly because my love had to be exposed like this.

“Jay, don't get me wrong. I am prejudiced. I know that you are an honest, ambitious guy. But if you are thinking about Maya, think hard, think slowly and think true. She has seen lot of ups and downs in her little life. More downs then ups. She is lonely. I pray to God that she gets a life partner who understands her, who will love her and comfort her forever. I want her to be happy.”

I could see tears in Sunidhi's eyes. She caught the handle of a chair and slowly sat down. I had never seen her get emotional in all these six years.
